Helping your teen pick the right university program
When picking the right university program, there are a few key things your teen needs to consider:
Your teen’s strengths and interests
Location (in your province or another province)
Culture fit
Academic requirements
Co-op or placement opportunities
Supplementary applications
Interviews
Scholarship opportunities
Of all of these factors, students typically make decisions based on their strengths/interests, followed closely by the academic threshold required by the university.
Imagine if your teen is interested in biology/health sciences, but hates coding. That rules out any computer science or related program.
The next step is to determine if your teen meets the school’s admissions requirements.
As an example, let’s take a look at McMaster Health Sciences.
For students applying within Ontario, they state an anticipated admission range of min. 90%.**

If your teen has marks in the 95% and up range, academic thresholds likely won’t get in the way of getting accepted.
But if your teen has marks below what would be considered competitive, that’s where things get dicey.
No matter the case, your teen’s best-fit post-secondary path is out there.
